Current Study

12 Projects (In Progress)

My current study is of the effect of globalization and the changing of times on culture and civilization. Images are of modern day Turkey (original photographs used) and incorporate Turkish designs. Views are from various locations and perspectives. Acrylic paint and colored pencil are the most commonly used medium. Impressionism is a repeated style, and architecture is consistently depicted.

Night Street

Night Street

If you walk the streets of Dalyan, Turkey, you will be surrounded by many European tourists. This small village attracts vacationers because of its proximity to the sea. This piece depicts the blending of cultures and the energy that these tourists bring to the little town. The tangled lines surround the people and old buildings for this reason. The upbeat and curious tourists are also in motion. Charcoal and pastel.

View from the Boat

A changing city is observed by a woman from a boat. She regards the change discomfort and nostalgia, understanding that the culture is fading just like the fading tile patterns surrounding the image. Acrylic and colored pencil.

View from the Cobbled Street

Old buildings looming over the viewer. Age and detail is seen in this impressionistic take on architecture in Turkey. Acrylic.

Hagia Sophia

This piece shows a historical building that has gone from many changes (from church to mosque to museum). Now the city around it changes with cranes and people as examples of modernity (to be added). 18 x 24 in. Acrylic.

Bridged

Turkey is in both Europe and Asia. The Bosporus Bridge in Istanbul connects the continents and allows for the flow of cultures. This image has patterns representing Turkey spreading from both sides. The bridge is suspended by the people. Acrylic. 8 in X 12 in.

Handcrafted Past

Modern buildings surround the older building in the middle. This central building took much longer to create, which is why it hasn't been completed yet. The sand that slips through the fingers shows that this building was handcrafted and creates the shape of an hourglass to depict the passing of time. The modern buildings are already up because of new, time-saving technology used ti create them. Acrylic. 16 x 20 in.

Disturbed Sky

A village in Turkey is overgrown with roses, pomegranates, black pepper trees, and many other native plants. The serenity of nature is disrupted by the power lines that clutter the sky. To better display the connection between nature and technology, birds are drawn perched on the lines. Both the natural elements and man-made structures are intertwined. Acrylic. 8 in X 12 in.

Interwoven Identity

Certain cultural identities are brought to the forefront because of globalization, leaving behind the minority. In this piece, the Turkish rugs are representative of different cultures. The more prominent ones are closer to the figure and have a greater impact on identity. The rest are loosely associated. Turkish patterns and beads are used. Acrylic. 16 x 20 in.

Between the Sea and the Sky

Turkish skyline separates the sea and sky. The city is built upon itself, with nothing being separate from anything else. As times change, more is added. Acrylic.

Window to Nature

Natural elements common to Turkey are depicted here. Figs and pomegranetes are in the foreground are common to the country. The background image shows the Turkish countryside. These are elements unique to the country. The same picture could be made for any country, but it would be different. Acrylic. 16 x 20 in.
